Kiera Greenaway (she/her) is a graduate student completing her MSc in Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta (U of A). She holds an undergraduate degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering, also from the U of A, and is a registered Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) in Alberta. Her master’s research investigates the environmental degradation of polyethylene microplastics. Since starting the project, Kiera has become captivated by the multidisciplinary intersections of microplastics. Alongside weathering experiments, Kiera is now working to develop the new Sustainable Design course for the U of A. The course aims to provide students with the tools and understanding needed to develop comprehensive solutions the complex problem space that is environmental microplastics.
Kiera is an active member in many extracurricular groups, including advocacy, science communication, and student governance. She strives to incorporate sustainability theory and practice into her everyday life as often as possible, and she is dedicated to improving material conditions through systems thinking and design.
